PRACTICAL  NURSING 


The Practical Nursing Program Includes:

  • 1350 clock hours of instruction.
  • More than half of the program is hands-on in local health care facilities and hospitals.
  • Small group instruction with highly qualified, experienced and certified Nursing Instructors teaching the course.
  • Preparation for successfully completing the NCLX exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Help with job placement.   

What Can Practical Nurses Do?

  • Work in hospitals, clinics, long term care facilities, doctor offices, health centers and rehab centers.
  • Promote patient health and safety education.
  • Be responsible for day to day care needs of patients or residents.
  • Perform nursing services such as vital signs, wound care, comfort measures, and personal care.
  • Administer medications.

Like never before, the demand for nurses is high.  The possibilities are endless for qualified nurses with many opportunities for advancement.  It takes a special person to be a nurse, and it is a rewarding career.  The High Tech North School of Practical Nursing is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing.

Accreditation

High Tech North is a part of the Lee County School District.  The school is an accredited member of the Council on Occupational Education.  Governing agencies for the Practical Nursing Program include the Florida State Department of Education and the Florida State Board of Nursing.

Application and Acceptance Procedure

The Practical Nursing program is a 1350-hour program. One class of 24 students begins in September; a class of 12 students starts in January and then another in May. Program theory classes meet Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and program clinical hours will vary. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.

Step #3 in the application materials refers to the Medical Math section.  Please note:

  • Students must come to the Learning Center to take the section tests and the final exam.

  • Tests will ONLY be given AFTER the student has earned TABE levels of 11.0 in all categories or students with college degrees have passed the math readiness test.

  • Medical mathematics study can be completed online or using a written study guide. The fee per term for testing and remediation of medical mathematics is $30. Please contact the HTN Learning Center to enroll or for additional information.

 

There may be some limited clinical training that is scheduled in the evenings and on weekends.  The maximum enrollment is 24 students per class with the class starting in September, and 12 students per class with the classes starting in January and May.  Applicants must be 18 years old prior to entering the program and have a high school diploma or GED.  Admission to the Practical Nursing Program is competitive.  An Admissions Committee will review all applications and determine admittance.  The Admissions Committee will also rank all applicants for the available number of seats in the program. 

Drug Screening and FDLE Background Check

All applicants are required to submit to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement a request for a background check.  The cost is paid by the applicant.  All incoming nursing students are given a drug screening, the cost is paid by the student.  All nursing students must purchase the health/accident insurance through the school.

The "Application and Acceptance Process" takes time; if interested in the PN program don't delay, call the school and ask to speak with a School Counselor.  All applicants are required to take the TABE, the NLN test and the PAX and will also be required to complete a Medical Math test.  Remedial help can be arranged in the Learning Center for the TABE.   Call 574-4440 for more information.
