Patient Care Assistant

Mission Statement:

The purpose of the 290 hour Patient Care Assistant program is to prepare students for employment as advanced cross trained Nursing Assistants, Home Health Aides, and Patient Care Assistants and to provide supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in any of these occupations.

  • As a Patient Care Assistant, you learn to help the patient meet their daily needs, like brushing hair or teeth, bathing, and dressing.
  • As a Patient Care Assistant, you will earn certification in CPR (Basic Life Support) and become a vital member of the health care team.
  • After completion of the 1st program (Core & NA) - a student can take the state exam for their CNA License Certificate.

Description:

The Patient Care Assistant program is a planned sequence of  290 hours of instruction consisting of the Health Careers Core and three additional health occupation programs.  A student who completes the applicable competencies at any one of the three program exit points may either continue with the training or exit as a program completer with a certificate.  Upon completion of the entire 290 hours the student will receive an additional state certificate for the PCA program.

The health care related programs available in the PCA program sequence are:

  • Health Careers Core & Nursing Assistant - 165 hours (NA certificate)

  • Home Health Aide - 50 hours (HHA certificate)

  • Patient Care Assistant - 75 hrs (290 hours, PCA state certificate)

Those students who complete the Core & Nursing Assistant segment are eligible to take the State of Florida CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) test.
